How many sizes do we have in Ukulele and what are the tone differences?
Sizes: 4 (Soprano, Concert, Tenor and Baritone.)
Soprano: 21 inches
Concert: 23 inches
Tenor: 26 inches
Baritone: 30 inches
Tone Difference : The Soprano ukulele has the recognizable “plink” sound that almost everyone associates with this instrument.
The Concert ukulele spans the middle ground between the Soprano and Tenor ukulele sizes.
The Tenor ukulele offers the longest common scale for GCEA tuning which makes tight strings ideal for finger picking and any applications that need a stiff response.
The Baritone ukulele is almost only strung with a low top string (linear tuning- low to high.)
So, which kind is suitable for me?
If you prefer the sound many people associate with the instrument, the Soprano ukulele is your choice. If you tell someone that you play the ukulele, I’m sure that they’ll picture you holding this very ukulele.
For the people who want to find a ukulele the size and tone spanning between the Soprano and Tenor sizes, I would recommend the Concert ukulele. Being the “underdog” on the size chart, the Concert ukulele is an amazing and loved choice for the people looking for something in between the two sizes.
Tenor ukuleles are becoming popular due to more and more people getting used to the less-traditional sound. It is also a popular choice for modern performers recently and is a favorite of many people.
Some people will also enjoy playing the Baritone ukulele, which is the biggest of the lot. Featuring a unique sound and being favored by some of the great jazz players, the Baritone ukulele is a must-have for guitarists that are looking for a ukulele’s sound.
